Puerto Rico: Hurricane Erin Hits, Causing Power Outages and Flooding

Hurricane Erin, the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, has hit Puerto Rico hard, bringing widespread power outages, heavy rain, and coastal flooding. Around 159,000 customers have lost electricity as a result of the storm. Torrential downpours have caused flash floods and mudslides in multiple areas, while dangerous surf and strong rip currents have prompted safety warnings for residents and beachgoers. More than 20 flights have been canceled due to the storm’s impact.

The National Weather Service confirmed as many as 10 tornadoes in the Chicago metro area on Monday, July 15. Tornado sirens blared through the downtown area as the storms rolled in. A tornado was reported touching down in Chicago O'Hare International Airport and a separate possible one was spotted on the ground near Midway International Airport, hampering flight departures and arrivals.
